Beetroot Juice Helps Reduce Heart Disease And Stroke Risk Factors

| February 26, 2015

These days it seems beetroot juice is all the rage… and with very good reason. In recent years, research has shown that regular consumption of beetroot juice can help reduce cognitive decline by increasing the blood flow to certain parts of the brain.

In fact the results of these early studies prompted Dr. Cheryl Bushnell, director of Wake Forest Baptist Health’s Comprehensive Stroke Centre, to set up a clinical trial designed to determine if beetroot juice can safely and effectively aid stroke recovery.

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked or bursts. Without blood and the oxygen it carries, parts of the brain start to die and the parts of the body controlled by the damaged areas of the brain can’t function properly.

After a stroke, however, new cells form in the brain. Dr. Bushnell says her study, which will involve 80 stroke patients, aims to see if drinking beetroot juice can “actually enhance patients’ recovery” because of the way nitric oxide (found in high quantities in beetroot) promotes the growth of new blood vessels.

Dr. Bushnell’s trial will conclude in two years’ time and we’ll have to wait until then to see if beetroot juice can help stroke victims recover quicker. However, another study, published in the journal Hypertension, found that drinking beetroot juice every day for four weeks can significantly reduce high blood pressure — a reduction in blood pressure has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease and stroke.

The study, conducted by scientists at Queen Mary University of London — and funded by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) — tested 64 patients with hypertension in a clinical trial between 2011 and 2013.

Half the patients drank a 250ml glass of beetroot juice every day, while the other half received a placebo.

Lead researcher, Professor Amrita Ahluwalia, said that the results of the study showed that participants who consumed beetroot juice experienced an improvement of around 20 per cent in blood vessel dilation capacity and a 10 per cent reduction in arterial stiffness — both of which substantially reduce the risk of heart disease.

The beetroot juice patients also experienced an average decrease in blood pressure, which for many patients brought their blood pressure levels back into normal ranges. According to Prof Ahluwalai, these positive results come down to the nitric oxide, which is found in beetroot and other leafy green vegetables such as lettuce and cabbage.

Prof Ahluwalai added: “This research has proven that a daily inorganic nitrate dose can be as effective as medical intervention in reducing blood pressure.” Ahluwalia described the findings as significant given that studies suggested each 2mmHg increase in blood pressure, increased the likelihood of death from heart disease by 7 per cent, and stroke by 10 per cent.

Dr Shannon Amoils, senior research advisor for the BHF, described the results of the trial, and the possibility of using a natural product to control hypertension, as “appealing”, but warned that additional research with a larger sample of patients and over a longer period of time was required.

In the meantime, you don’t have to wait for the mainstream to give you permission to enjoy the heart-protective benefits of beetroot juice. Good quality organic beetroot juice is available at natural health food stores and it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

It’s quite freaky, but the first time I had a glass of beetroot juice my pee was purple! But I love it and I think it’s great to drink on a regular basis.

  2. Celeste says:

My husband juices his own beetroot juice. It makes such a mess, but he says he feels healthier and more enegetic since he started drinking it, so I’m not gonna stop him.

  3. Padhraico says:

Excellent article as I have experience of some of the changes beetroot can have on an even healthy person. I grow my own and use the leaves as they contain more nutrients than the actual tuber.

Even better than beet juice is beet kvass – lacto fermented beet juice! I add in garlic to my kvass, giving it even more efficacious. And much less expensive than bottled beet juice.
