Protect Your Heart Health With Beta-Glucans

In a new study, researchers from the People’s Hospital of Gaozhou in China found that consuming beta-glucans — found in oats, barley, certain types of mushrooms, yeasts, seaweed, and algae — reduced total and LDL “bad” cholesterol 26 mmol/L and 21 mmol/L, respectively.

In this latest meta-analysis, the researchers looked at the results of 17 randomized controlled trials with 916 subjects and crunching the numbers, they concluded that beta-glucans led to significant reductions in total and LDL cholesterol levels.

Even though these results are positive, there is a catch: The reduction of total and LDL cholesterol levels were only seen in subjects that were hypercholesterolemic — having elevated cholesterol levels and the researchers noted that beta-glucans had no effect on HDL “good” cholesterol or triglycerides levels.

Writing in the journal Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases, the researchers said: “Our meta-analysis revealed that the consumption of beta-glucans in hypercholesterolemic subjects assisted with 6.3 per cent reduction in LDL-cholesterol and 6.5 per cent reduction in total cholesterol levels, which suggests that beta-glucan may be incorporated into a targeted dietary programme as part of public health policy to improve cardiovascular health.”

Numerous previous studies have shown the cholesterol-lowering potential of beta-glucans. In fact, previous studies have found that barley beta-glucans can help reduce LDL cholesterol between 7 and 24 per cent, while oat beta-glucans have been found to reduce LDL cholesterol levels between 6 and 12 per cent.
