Billion Pound Statin Drug Empire Could Trigger A Diabetes Epidemic

| July 30, 2015

Cholesterol-lowering drugs have been heralded as a “wonder drug” for decades… an elixir that has the potential to banish heart disease as the number-one killer.

But you and I know very well that this is far from the truth. The side effects linked to these drugs are nothing short of a horror show. I’m talking about kidney and liver failure, memory loss, depression and severe muscle fatigue and deterioration, to mention but a few.

Another of these side effects is type 2 diabetes…

In 2012 the FDA issued a warning about the increased risk of high blood sugar and type 2 diabetes in statin users… at the time, I’m sure, Big Pharma thought nothing of it and many pharmaceutical companies argued that many patients on statin drugs are elderly… or sick… or maybe would have developed diabetes anyway.

However, in 2014 statin users who have developed type 2 diabetes as a result of these drugs hit back by filing more than 1,300 product liability lawsuits involving Lipitor (a global top-selling statin drug), in the US.

Plaintiffs said that Pfizer (the makers of Lipitor) was aware that the statin could increase the risk for developing type 2 diabetes, but concealed this information from patients and doctors.

But it’s not just Lipitor that’s at fault here…

Recent research out of Texas proved to be the final smoking gun, pointing straight at every statin drug on the market.

This study was the first to show (without a doubt!) that statins may be turning thousands of healthy people into diabetics. And the risk may be twice as serious as we were ever led to believe.

Researchers from the University of Texas South-western poured through records until they found 26,000 patients who were all free from heart disease, diabetes, and any other chronic health condition. These patients were what the study’s lead researcher, Dr. Ishak Mansi, called “a very healthy population.”

Sadly, they didn’t stay that way for long.

The researchers found that once patients started taking statins, their chances of developing new-onset diabetes skyrocketed by 87 per cent! That’s nearly twice the 46 per cent risk reported in a previous study out of Finland.

The evidence is mounting fast, making it clear that statins can literally unleash war on your body destroying its ability to regulate your blood sugar levels, increase your insulin resistance and keeping your pancreas from making enough of the insulin your body needs.

Of course, once you can’t control your blood sugar you’re on the fast track to a heart attack or stroke — the very things you were trying to prevent by taking statins in the first place.

The real kicker is that according to the research, the longer you stay on statins, the higher your risk of diabetes. And we all know that the minute some mainstream doctor writes you a prescription for Lipitor, Crestor or Zocor, he expects you to stay on the drug for the rest of your life.

If you’re serious about protecting your heart and keeping your cholesterol in the healthy range, try heart-friendly eating plans like the Mediterranean diet and look for natural cholesterol-lowering remedies such as Berberine and niacin.

Here's to keeping your heart strong and healthy
