Taking Statin Drugs Can Double Your Travel Insurance Costs

| August 20, 2015

As if it’s not enough that millions of people are needlessly being told to take cholesterol-lowering statin drugs and filling the pockets of Big Pharma with billions of pounds in the process, travel insurance companies are now trying to cash-in on the great cholesterol con.

UK travel insurance companies have been found to hike up prices for anyone who has high cholesterol, even when it is being controlled by statin drugs. This means that British holidaymakers who are taking statin drugs are now forced to pay DOUBLE for their travel insurance.

A recent investigation into travel insurance costs revealed how a healthy 55-year-old on a week’s holiday in Turkey is being charged £10.42, whereas anyone who declares that they have high cholesterol (or is taking statin drugs) is paying £19.05.

More than half the UK population is estimated to have high cholesterol, with millions of people taking statin drugs — the UK’s most widely prescribed drug. So, insurance companies are bound to make a pretty penny from their underhand tactics.

Examples of unfair and hiked up insurance charges were also found when checks were carried out for people with high blood pressure.

These price hikes are not in line with similar life and health insurance charges for people who are taking statin drugs. Experts also said the increased charges are not justified and are ‘out of proportion’ to the actual risk posed by people with high cholesterol and blood pressure.

Jules Payne, chief executive of Heart UK, said: ‘This penalises people who are actually at lower risk than many others.’

The British Insurance Brokers’ Association said that the premiums should not be higher if people controlled their cholesterol with medication or were told by doctors they did not need to take anything.

Some insurers said the problem was partly a result of trying to simplify online questionnaires.

What a load of codswallop.

Not only has the mainstream succeeded in pulling the wool over people’s eyes for the past four decades regarding the supposed dangers of high cholesterol, but now insurance companies are trying to cash in on this misinformation by milking holiday makers for extra cash.

The bottom line is, raised cholesterol levels should not have any significant effect on your risk of needing treatment while you are on holiday… unless of course you end up in hospital because of the side effects of statin drugs.
